Homeowners tend to give a lot of thought to the finish of their cabinet exteriors during a renovation or new build. But if you haven’t considered the interiors of your cabinets, then you’re missing out on a big opportunity to add a lively dose of character to your kitchen. Here’s how color and pattern on the inside of your cabinets can elevate your cooking space.
Subtler than a colorful exterior, a lovely eye-catching color on the inside of a glass-front cabinet is a time-honored way to jazz up white cabinets.
Think about what will be on display. When choosing the color for the insides of glass-front cabinets, consider not only how it will fit with the entire room, but also how it will work with the items you plan to display. In this kitchen the pale green interior complements the garden-themed dishes.
The color you pick for the interiors of your cabinets should be balanced elsewhere in the room. In my opinion, a single glass-front cabinet with color backing would probably look odd. It’s best to complement the color with other items in the room; note how the stools and window treatment shown here complement the pale blue cabinet interiors.
If subtlety is not your thing, choose a bright accent color to show off your wares. White will, of course, pop against any bright color. If you have colored dishes, however, consider using a complementary color to set them off, like with the blue dishes against the orange background in this cabinet.
Some kinds of glass, especially frosted glass, will tone down the interior color, so try a few different shades to get the intensity you want.
No glass doors? A beautiful color on the inside of a solid-door cabinet can make you smile each time you open it.
Imagine this cabinet full of creamware or silver or antique white tablecloths. What a delight it would be to open it every time.
Open shelves are excellent accent color candidates. These cabinets pick up the wall color, creating an interesting play between the two.
Pattern can add interest to a cabinet interior just as well. Just be sure that the items you display won’t compete with it. Here storage pieces with orange accents complement and pop out against the gray pattern.
Consider wallpaper for your punch, too. If you don’t want to permanently adhere it to the cabinet, cut foam-core board to size and apply the wallpaper to it. This can work well for fabrics, too (just wrap the edges and staple, glue or tape the fabric to the back side).
How about adding a wood veneer finish to the inside of your cabinets? This kitchen’s very modern style is warmed up with a little bit of wood at the top.
A wood finish can provide a neutral and natural feel that paint just can’t. Walnut veneer in these beautifully detailed glass cabinets provides depth without adding another color.
Cost: Varies. Some cabinet lines will allow you to do a different finish on the interior, which would be an upcharge, but pricing varies by manufacturer. This could be a great DIY project with paint, wallpaper or fabric, done either directly on the back or on a substrate material, like foam-core board.
