Guest Picks: Casually Refined His-and-Her Den Decor

My husband, Scott, and I have this funny little room just off our main living space. Over the past several months, it has unofficially become our version of a “man room,” although we’ve never enjoyed that title in the past. We’ve chosen a rich green for the walls and have been layering in art and storage for our vinyl collection. It feels like a room in which you want to wear your velvet robe, smoke a pipe and put your favorite record on a turntable. At the same time, we never take ourselves too seriously and enjoy a good balance of his and hers, so we’re looking forward to incorporating more feminine pieces (such as plush rugs, cushy pillows and soft lines in furniture) while keeping the room refined. Here’s our take on how we’d pull together a similar room, the room that has you wondering, “What goes in here?” — Kim from Yellow Brick Home

modern armchairs by Jayson Home
Stefano Chair - $995 I'm loving the subtle nailhead detail and casters for Scott, and the velvet upholstery has my heart.

eclectic pillows by Kate Spade Saturday
Envelope Pillow, Painted Floral - $35 The vibrant colors and painterly quality of this pillow speak to me. Layer this with the Fringed Denim Circle Pillow below for a mix of his and hers.

eclectic accessories and decor by Z Gallerie
Alligator Bookends, Set of 2 - $49.95 Every room needs a touch of quirk, and Scott and I think these alligator bookends would add just that. Stack your favorite novels, magazines and notebooks between the shimmery gold head and tail.

contemporary pillows by Kate Spade Saturday
Fringed Denim Circle Pillow - $40 The contrasting black fringe on this otherwise simple pillow is just the right amount of funk to bring some subtle texture into the room. Layer it with the floral pillow above for a winning combo.

contemporary rugs by Crate&Barrel
Ottavio Rug - $649 No slippers needed with this rug.

traditional mirrors by Anthropologie
Anastasia Mirror - $398 I'm 100 percent guilty of loving anything over-the-top ornate and gold, and this mirror fits that bill. This shiny metal accent would look stunning against a deep wall color while serving its main purpose, bouncing the light around.

modern bookcases by IKEA
Vittsjö Shelving Unit - $70 Scott and I set up this practical Ikea unit in our little nook and added warm wood shelves to it to hold our vinyl collection. This affordable bookcase could work seamlessly in any room, whether you’re displaying music, art or the more obvious choice, books.

traditional books by Amazon
Penguin Classics Hardcover Collection - $214.61 Dive back into the classics. Over the past several years, Penguin has rereleased its most popular literature in beautifully bound styles. They’d be a great addition to a library, music room or nook, don’t you think?

contemporary cups and glassware by UncommonGoods
Wood and Ceramic Tumblers, Set of 2 - $100 Just as your morning coffee must be poured in your favorite mug, you’ll need a fantastic cup for your bourbon while relaxing in this room. These handmade tumblers are gorgeous, and although they’re more than I’d usually spend, they’d sure make nightcaps extra special.

contemporary prints and posters by Debbie Carlos
Flowers Poster - $40 With album covers and book spines lending color to this room, one large statement art piece is all it needs. This black and white print feels masculine, but the floral imagery brings in some feminine whimsy.

traditional paints stains and glazes by Benjamin Moore
Newburg Green HC-158 Paint Scott and I toyed with the idea of Benjamin Moore’s Newburg Green for our own music nook. It’s so rich and sophisticated.

contemporary throws by West Elm
Chunky Tassel Throw, Blue Sage - $69 Men rarely seem to need a blanket, but isn’t this one nice? The tassels make it more than your ordinary throw, and the thick, chunky knit makes it practical for the colder months.

contemporary pillows by Cost Plus World Market
Green Khadi Tufted Floor Cushion - $39.99 Scott and I always go back and forth over adding floor pillows to a room. I personally love them, believing they lend a casual vibe. This catchall room in which we’ll enjoy music, curl up with a book or doze off for afternoon naps is an especially good place for them, I think. The soft green of this one won’t be too jarring for him, and I will have a soft place to perch while flipping through the vinyl collection.

modern indoor pots and planters by Z Gallerie
Glass Terrarium - $59.95 Our black thumbs have yet to keep a plant alive, but we do agree that greenery can complete a room. These glass terrariums bring warmth with their wooden bases, and they even allow you to think outside the box. Fill them with hard-to-kill air plants or your favorite figurines, top with glass and you’re done! Look at you, fancy.

contemporary wallpaper by F. Schumacher & Co.
Onna Sisal Wallpaper, Black Forgo the paint and try textured, moody wallpaper instead. Swap out the reading chair for something lighter and brighter, and everything else will fall into place. Allow this sisal wallpaper to be your new neutral.

transitional wall sconces by Schoolhouse Electric
Princeton Sophomore Sconce - $159 I would keep the overhead lighting simple but add a punch with a couple of wall sconces flanking the reading (listening, napping) chair. This Princeton sconce is not only affordable but also a good blend of glam (for me) and practicality (for him). Win-win!

modern side tables and accent tables by Urban Outfitters
Turner Side Table - $210 When I think of a refined and sophisticated room, I imagine a lot of rich wood tones. This side table would be the perfect landing spot for a bourbon.

modern home electronics by Amazon
Technics SL-1200MK2 Manual Stereo Turntable, Old Version - $500 Scott and I both share a major love for our vinyl collection, and a good turntable can make all the difference. Music sets the mood, so to speak. So what will it be? Jazz? Motown? Or are you feeling rock ‘n’ roll today?

traditional curtains by Cost Plus World Market
Natural Jaya Canvas Curtain - $29.99 In addition to clean white trim, nothing else will allow the lush colors of this room to stand out like equally bright curtains. Allow them to barely pool on the floor for a luxurious feel.

eclectic pillows by The Land of Nod
Camp Raccoon Throw Pillow - $29 Scott and I are all about adding the unexpected to a room — injecting fun is a must! — so I love the idea of tossing in this raccoon pillow for a dose of humor.
