As with many modern and midcentury-inspired decor items, lighting fixtures can be a major draw. Desirable designs are sold by all kinds of retailers these days. And this is especially fortunate for me, because I’m in the market for all kinds of lights these days, from floor lamps to task lamps to beautiful pendants.
Have you ever moved into a house where the only lights were attached to unattractive ceiling fans? That happened to me. I’m working hard to overcome it by updating every room with pieces that are more in line with my 1950s home’s roots. With a little Mad Men, a little midcentury bungalow and a touch of industrial, this selection of lighting is sure to inspire. — Emily from Merrypad
Midcentury Overarching Wall Sconce - $269 This wall-mount light has beautiful midcentury appeal. I’d flank the bed with a set for a clean-lined look.
Sputnik Filament Floor Lamp, Polished Nickel - $595 This floor lamp is a daring statement piece that has a special throwback aesthetic.
Petal Puzzle Pendant Light Happiness is a flower pendant! If I had a foyer with a tall ceiling, I’d add this beautiful, welcoming piece.
Dimond D2183 Dark Brown Logan Square Floor Arc Lamp - $358 I admire an oversize arc lamp, one that has enough impact to brighten an entire room. The clean lines of the spine on this one are really eye catching, and I like how the bow holds the shade at an angle.
Factory Light No. 8, White - $285 This modern take on an industrial pendant would work with many home styles. Best of all: You can specify the cord length you want.
Otis Streamline Wall Bracket, Brushed Nickel - $240 I was surprised by the assortment of wall-mount lights sold at Rejuvenation. This midcentury-friendly piece caught my eye. The horizontal lines stand out, and its size would be perfect for my front porch.
Peel Pendant Lamp - $199 Arcs of oak veneer lined with a touch of red make this a unique statement piece. I wonder how the light would look shining through the arcs in a dark room.
Mr. Kate Lines Black Ceiling Light - $199.99 A giclée print gives this semiflush ceiling light unexpected flair. The same style of shade is also available for a variety of other light designs, so you can coordinate throughout a space.
Contour Double Sconce - $79 This double sconce is one of my all-time favorite lights for over the bathroom sink. I like it so much that I just installed my second. It’s so shiny and clean lined.
Aurora Lamp Base, Walnut - $228 This little desk lamp has a natural wooden base, a twisted electrical cord and a beautiful globe lightbulb.
Pink Ceramic Lightbulb - $5 Think pink and add an inexpensive pink bulb to an already cool fixture. Need a feel-good piece for your workspace? I think this is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Spotlight Desk Lamp I’m always drawn to task lamps, and the clean design of this one’s base is especially appealing.
Otis Sconce - $89 The faceted shade on this wall sconce is attractive in an unusual way.
Lykta Table Lamp, White - $14.99 Did you ever think you’d find a mouth-blown lamp for less than $15? This classic Ikea design can easily infuse any bedside table with modern flair.
Marble Floor Lamp - $199 This cool floor lamp presents as a modern industrial piece. Its marble base is intriguing, and the piece is so sleek that it could fit into a tight living space.
Faux Antler Chandelier - $999 Ever since my days hanging out in ski lodges, I’ve admired pretty antler chandeliers. This faux-antler piece is more affordable than one made with the real thing and could create an interesting look in an otherwise modern home.
Reid Table Lamp - $575 Wood and wood-finished metal make this task lamp beautiful — and unexpected.
Happy Chic by Jonathan Adler Chloe Lotus Table Lamp - $80 Lotus blossoms prettify this lamp base. This piece is perfect for a living room side table or as a feminine accent on a bedroom dresser.
Cosmo Pendant - $299 Super. Cool. Pendant. This piece is a real eye catcher with its industrial-meets-vintage-meets-spacey design. It would look great with an old-school Edison lightbulb.
Linden Floor Lamp - $1,125 The clean lines and natural wood present in a very modern way in this floor lamp. I also like that it looks vaguely like antlers — to me that means it could sit easily in a lodge or in a contemporary living room.
