I often use ideabooks as a tool to show my clients the products I have in mind and the direction I’m going in for a room. In this one you’ll see a look that I created for a soft and pretty bedroom and playroom for twin girls. I worked with my clients to find a combination of items from around the web and great local deals. I think the key to achieving a layered look (and happy clients) is to use a combination of high- and low-end furniture and accessories, with an emphasis placed on art to add color and personality — just like I did in this soft and pretty room. — Nicole from Nicole Scott Designs
Animal Painting by The Litus Gallery If I can, I always include original art. This little painting that I found on Etsy was my inspiration for the room.
Marais Wide Dresser, Antique Gray Mist - $1,299 I proposed a French-style dresser like this one from Restoration Hardware. I was looking for a large and curvy piece with just the right amount of patina.
Olunda Picture, Butterflies - $12.99 I could not resist this fun art piece from Ikea! I love the little touches of purple peeking out from behind the butterflies' wings.
Safavieh Milan Shag Ivory Rug - $124.99 This round rug helped me create a dressing room effect in the playroom, but more important, it makes for a nice and soft place to play.
Clara Marine Cotton Fabric Round Ottoman - $313.99 I envisioned floating a round velvet ottoman atop the shag rug to create a little dressing room feeling. The tufted velvet makes it feel very grown-up.
Eliza Tufted Bed - $799 I love the Eliza upholstered bed from Pottery Barn Kids. I chose the whole bed for this project, but to cut costs, you can order just the headboard.
Embroidered Lattice Voile Duvet Cover, Lavender - $179 The girls’ mom chose these lavender duvet covers from Restoration Hardware as the pale and pretty toppers for the new beds.
Shell Trellis Sheet Set - $130 I tend to stay away from any major use of pink when decorating little girls’ rooms, but there is a place for some pretty pink accents. In this case I used sheets, because just a hint of pink will do.
Bindi Lavender Decorative Pillow - $125 The accent pillows I selected have small-scale patterns that create a little quiet texture on the beds. I especially love this one from John Robshaw.
Embroidered Starburst Pillow Cover, Light Pool - $39 To break up the pink and purple on the beds, I added a minty green pillow with a subtle pattern.
Gateway Mirror - $179 Every girl needs a mirror! I love this Shabby Chic–style window-look mirror from Urban Barn for some added texture and character. It keeps everything in the space from feeling too brand new.
Clara Chair, Sky Dune Velvet - $999 What can I say except that I love this Clara chair from Crate & Barrel. It can grow with the girls and even move to other rooms of the house later on. You never lose with classic styling like this.
‘Sisters’ Photograph by Marianne LoMonaco - $35 Photo art from Etsy is a perfect way to add color and personality to a room on a budget. I found this sweet flower photo at Marianne LoMonaco’s great shop.
‘Apocatastasis’ Photograph by Raceytay - $15 I used pretty photos and a mix of other art pieces to create a gallery wall. This dandelion photo is another great Etsy find.
Crystal Droplet Swirl Chrome Ceiling Light - $149.99 I shopped around for just the right light, and this crystal drop fixture is a fraction of the cost of many others in similar styles. More important, it adds just the right amount of wow.
Ritva Curtains With Tiebacks, White - CAD 29.99 These inexpensive and hard-wearing linen curtain panels from Ikea soften a window.
Marcelle Writing Desk and Hutch, Antiqued Gray - $899 I made sure to select furniture that could grow with the girls or be used elsewhere in the house. This desk is a classic and beautifully distressed piece from Restoration Hardware.
Christopher Knight Home Katrina Beige Tufted Linen Dining Chair - $229.99 I like the idea of a chair with some tufting (like the ottoman) in a muted gray This way, the desk and chair will complement each other but are not a matching set.
Oliver Ivory Ceramic Owl Table Lamp - $39.99 This little owl lamp is just the kind of whimsical accessory I like to add to any room I design.
Silver Beaded Knob - $6.95 I chose closet knobs with some silver accents to match with (but not repeat) the look of the crystal light. These bring the bling without feeling too matchy.
Revere Pewter HC-172 Paint The paint choice for this room was Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter HC-172. It is a soft, almost shimmery gray taupe that helps create a sweet and calm mood.
Here you can see how the bedding came together with the mix of lavender, pink and mint.

Here’s the dresser area and the small gallery wall that includes the piece that inspired the whole room’s design.
