For those who have trouble sleeping, restful colors and a serene, streamlined space may be the way to go — but if sleep isn’t an issue for you, why not try something bolder? Spending time lounging in bed could be so much more fun in a fresh, colorful space that matches your personality. Check out our 13 colorful (raspberry grass cloth), creative (a secret nook) and personal (commissioned art) ways to spice up your bedroom.
1. Cover the walls in raspberry grass cloth. Add texture and color in one fell swoop with a richly hued grass cloth wall covering. With a color this vibrant on the wall, you can keep the rest of the space simple, picking up the raspberry color in pillows, lampshades or a water carafe.
2. Add a mysterious keyhole arch. Planning a remodel? Adding a semisecret nook off the bedroom can make the space feel larger and more useful — and if you have the space and are going to do it, why not do it in style? A keyhole-shaped arch provides just a bit of separation (and plenty of mystery) while still allowing light from the window to pass into the main room.
3. Hang a chair from the ceiling. If you have room for a chair, make it one with lots of personality — like the woven hanging basket chair shown here. It will catch the eye and be fun to sit in!
4. Paint the walls and trim a bright, bold hue. If you’ve been thinking of painting the walls in the bedroom a bold color, consider painting the trim, too. Painting both creates a warm, cozy, cocooning effect perfect for a bedroom.
5. Hang a rice paper lantern. You can get a pricey designer version if you want to, but you can also find budget versions everywhere from Ikea to Pier 1. The larger versions are like big moons in the bedroom.
6. Layer your bed with mixed and matched patterns. Changing the bedding is a quick and easy way to experiment with color and pattern — and since the bed is usually the largest object in the room, what you put there will make a big impact. Choose one smaller-scale pattern on the sheets, one larger-scale pattern on the coverlet and a third, more decorative, extra-large-scale print on an accent pillow.
7. Try patterned shades on the windows, too. Why stick with plain blinds when you can have fun, colorful shades made with any fabric you choose? For a budget alternative to custom shades, simply purchase plain white shades and sew or hot glue your own fabric right over them. Just be aware that adding layers of fabric will make the shades more opaque and may also make them harder to open and close. Test a small section before you begin.

8. Try a painted barn door. Who doesn’t love a barn door? Trade your bedroom or closet door for a sliding barn-style version, and paint it a fun accent color for a personal touch.
9. Commission a special piece of art. Saving up for a piece of art made especially for you can be worth; you’ll cherish the piece forever. Many artists will work from a photograph, so you don’t need to limit your search to your geographic area.
10. Use an antique door as a headboard. If you love hitting flea markets and antiques fairs, you’ve likely spotted a few gorgeous antique carved wood doors from time to time — scoop up the next one you see and turn it into a one-of-a-kind headboard.
11. Use curtains in a fresh way. Curtains hung on a wall can disguise a hideous paint color or wallpaper (perfect for renters!), and sheer or fringed curtains are a great way to add privacy and a dash of mystery to the bedroom.
12. Put up a wallpaper “headboard.” Another fun alternative to a traditional headboard is this wallpaper version — simply apply wallpaper about the same width as your bed on the wall behind it. Just be aware that if you ever want to move your bed, you won’t be able to take the headboard along.
13. Paint the walls a bright, bold hue, then stencil them. Supersaturated color not enough? Layer stenciled or hand-painted designs on top for a rich and interesting look.
