The new season of NBC’s singing competition The Voice premieres on February 24, and I am excited for this year’s season, with Shakira and Usher rejoining regular judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. I’s the only TV show I’ll carve out time to watch.
The show’s colors are black and red, a palette you maybe haven’t considered for your home. But you just might when you see the gorgeous spaces below take center stage and hit all their notes. If you are wondering how you might turn up the volume in your home, consider the winning combination of black and red.
A hint of red at the right moment is just as striking as a room full of red. Try a red pillow on a soft black sofa, paired with a splash of red in a great piece of art.
Red is eye catching. I prefer to see an accent wall of red against a black cabinet or floor versus a whole room painted red. An accent wall gives the eye somewhere to pause so it can take in the rest of the room.
This is a clever use of red against an otherwise black and white palette. Accessories are the way to go if you love the drama of a black and red palette, but prefer a lesser commitment.
Red underfoot is a striking look. Modern rugs and even Persian rugs paired with a black sofa are a winning combination. I love the line of red bar stools in the background as a firm commitment to the black and red statement.
I equate the placement of a red chair at a table like a red shoe with a black dress: surprising and bold.
You may think that a black and red palette is too dramatic for a bedroom that is supposed to be soft and soothing. Not so when each color is used in the right proportions.
I was surprised by how well this grouping works. I think it’s the warmth of the wood and the warmth of the red that pulls it off. The black table with its earthy veining and movement is a nice companion to the wood floors.
Black and red make for a classic exterior paint palette. The warmth and welcoming message of a red door is unmistakable. If black is too scary as a house color, consider planters and hardscaping in black, as shown here.
Houzz guides to choosing a front door color
Red and black look great with rustic details, contrasting knotty wood in an eye-pleasing way.
Small rooms can pull off a black and red palette, too. The Persian rug with warm tones here softens the crispness of the white walls and the black screen behind the bed.
I prefer using black and red with modern-lined furniture. Again, I like to go for contrast. The drama of the palette is softened by furniture with a simpler profile here. The modern art is also a great pairing with the bold red walls.
For a very low-commitment version of this color combo, try black furniture with red flowers that can be switched out after a couple days. It will make the perfect setting for a special dinner or party.
