Guest Picks: The Lights of Your Life

We have lighting on the mind — big time. When we purchased our house last summer, every light fixture throughout the home was of the same stock glass chandelier variety, but believe us, none was stunning or beautiful. Since taking over as homeowners, we’ve slowly been replacing every light, room by room, with very temporary flush-mounts. As time and money allow (and as each room slowly evolves), we’ll replace the temporary fixtures with permanent pieces, things that are more us. In a house that’s almost 130 years old, we’re leaning toward classic designs, but that hasn’t stopped us from wondering if that sunburst pendant might do the trick too! — Kim and Scott from Yellow Brick Home
Alto Sconce, Brass - $179 We could see two of these flanking the bed or framing the front door; either way, it’s a win.
Kosmos Pendant, Matte Black - $435 Black and chrome? Yes, please! This dome pendant could look stunning and sophisticated over an otherwise ordinary breakfast nook.
Kichler Lighting 42257OZ Lucien Olde Bronze 9-Light Chandelier - $319 This bare-bulb chandelier would make a big statement in a tall entryway. Not only is it very on trend, but it’s as affordable as it is stylish. Buy on Houzz
Isle Rod Pendant - $179 The little bulb peek is fun and playful, but the shape and design are classic. Brass? Or black? We’ll take one of each, please.
Jonathan Adler Meurice Chandelier, Deep Patina Bronze - $975.60 This Jonathan Adler chandelier has been a longtime favorite. It’s so glam, yet sleek and refined at the same time. What a statement this would make in a foyer (the taller the ceiling, the better) or dimly lighting evening meals. Buy on Houzz
Ralph Lauren Home Boom Arm Floor Lamp - $990 This hunky floor lamp comes in brass, bronze, black and chrome, so it can work in virtually any space. Our pick? Well, you might have noticed that we lean toward brass. Yowza!
Ceiling Light - $325 When we began the search for the perfect foyer light, we found ourselves drawn to fixtures that could also double in the dining room. This one would certainly make a statement without feeling over-the-top.
60-Watt Large Chrome-Tip Globe Bulb - $5 With so many fixtures baring the bulbs, it’s just as important to put thought into the light source itself. This chrome-dipped bulb would take the brightness down a notch while supplying downward light, say, bedside or in your favorite reading nook.
Soneca Pendant Lamp - $149 Designers Robert and Cortney Novagratz took an ordinary globe pendant and turned it on its side. The soft amber glass feels warm and fun at the same time.
Satellite Chandelier - $1,928 Hidden inside this fixture are 12 light sockets, which we can only imagine allow the brassy burst to really shine. This is more than we would typically spend on a single light, but wouldn’t you agree that it wants to be the star of the show?
Grand Metropolitan Dual-Finish Pendant - $384 It’s the little copper top that kills us. We love this unique piece as a task light, either alone or a few in a row.
Lavoisier Pendant Lamp, Honey - $168 This barely blush plug-in pendant needs a dark little corner to brighten up.
Arvella Chandelier, Brushed Nickel - $275 Clean lines and midcentury design? Yum.
Hood Globe Chandelier - $580 We’ve had a crush on this light for far too long. It might be about time to make things official in this poorly lit home of ours.
15-Inch Sheer Elegance Organza Drum Shade, Gold - $69 Sometimes your table lamps just need a little pick-me-up (just like the throw pillows on the couch do). Swapping in a new shade can make all the difference, and this sheer drum feels rich and elegant.
Brunswick Wall Lamp - $995 This wall lamp extends to almost 4 feet, and it satisfies our love of brass and black — the perfect balance of Scott and Kim.
Minka Aire F519-WH Concept II 52-Inch Ceiling Fan, White - $299.95 Ceiling fans don’t exactly get our hearts racing, but they’re absolutely necessary for our Chicago summers. This one feels unobtrusive, and we’ll admit that our hearts may be going pitter-patter. Buy on Houzz
Eclipse Chandelier - $249 We love the affordable price of West Elm’s chandeliers, and the handblown glass on this fixture gives it a little oomph — you know, without trying too hard.
Textile Cable Lamp With Switch and Plug, Orange by La Casa de Cotó - $51.89 Craving color? Bring it inside during these winter months with a bright cloth cord and a simple bare bulb.
Vanadin Ceiling/Wall Lamp, White - $39.99 It’s the little things. This affordable flush-mount would easily perk up a small space, like a bathroom, laundry room or mudroom.
