Room of the Day: Eclectic Elegance for a Victorian Living Room

“Formal” and “fun” are words that don’t often appear in the same sentence, but both apply to the living room in this San Francisco Victorian. It’s home to a busy family with young children, and the room is the setting for the make-believe games of the little ones and charity events staged by their civic-minded parents.
When interior designer Lizette Bruckstein of Lizette Marie Interior Design was hired, the room was being used as a storage area during construction. “There were claw-foot tubs sitting in here,” she says.
Her job was to liven it up after the dust settled. “The clients are young and fun — and they are not afraid of color,” she says. “They wanted to honor the history of the house but put a twist on it.”
No one would accuse them of walking a straight-and-narrow design path with the deep fuchsia sofa, chartreuse-green chaise and pair of plaid chairs.

But the details, subtle in the overall view and surprising on closer examination, are what really make this room come to life. The sofa’s arms are asymmetrical (the arm shown here is much wider than the other). The pattern in the curtains was created by layering a laser-cut fabric over microsuede cloth. And the vintage lamps have horse-head bases, adding a quiet smile.
“I’m all about using the unexpected in a room,” says Bruckstein. “It keeps things from getting too serious.”
The room is arranged for maximum seating opportunities. The chaise divides it into seating areas: On one side a round coffee table and two armchairs make a grouping. On the other this glass table and the sofa make another conversation area, defined by the hide rug. “Every room should have layers,” says Bruckstein. “They often have a lot of people over, and breaking up the room gives them seating options.”
