Rubber Duckie Day Fun to Float Your Boat

Yup! It’s January 13 and time again to celebrate Rubber Duckie Day in the U.S.

Many of you responded to last year’s article and shared photos and personal stories of your duckie collections. Since then the Houzz editorial team has curated some lovely duckie-related photos, which I’m eager to share. Time to go a-quacking!

The obvious place to start is the bathroom. Duckies are fun and stylish, but they don’t have to fit in for them to work. In fact, I find they’re most fun when they don’t.

Regardless of style, you have to put them somewhere. A great choice would be the toilet tank, which functions naturally as an oversize ducky shelf (what else?).

Duckies don’t have to stand out, though. They are equally cheerful in all colors, and you can find the right one to blend in. How long did it take you to spot the duck here?

I think I’ll write a poem:
If colors give you a heart attack,
Choose a modern, sleek design in black

Rubber ducks multiply in captivity. I know it sounds odd, but I’ve done the research; I’ve talked to people; I’ve seen this happen again and again. No one knows why or how, but we do know that all it takes is to adopt the first one.

For those about to introduce duckies into their lives, here’s a tip: Shelving is key to a successful duck collection. As long as you have shelves, you’re good. You don’t even need the tub.

But if you do have a tub and for some reason have a problem finding it, a duckie can serve as a buoy to guide you toward it.

Recent news of the fate of Florentijn Hofman’s giant rubber duckie in Taiwan have caused panic in the duck community. Did he fall or was he pushed?

Until the situation clears, this contender for the role of world’s largest duckie is keeping a low profile.

I’m a big science fan, and I’m proud to tell you that duckies have made a contribution to the science of oceanography.

Twenty-two years ago 28,800 rubber ducks and other bath toys were washed overboard from a container ship during a storm in the northern Pacific Ocean. They survived the harsh sun and sea conditions to surface months and years later, coming ashore around the Pacific Rim and eventually Europe. The travel of the Friendly Floatees helped form a breakthrough in the study of oceanic currents, marking the start of a new branch of scientific study: flotsam science.

It’s a pretty safe science; you can try it at home.

Happy Rubber Ducky Day!
Here at Houzz duck collecting is in full flight. Traveling employees brought back some memorabilia from overseas: ducks recalling the British Queen’s Guard and a German pub dweller, and a set of magnet duck chicks from Taiwan. Can you guess the shape and color of my suitcase tags?

A rather surprising addition to my desk is a rubber elephant, collected from a Thailand hotel (thanks, Mom!). You might wonder why it’s there. Well, as long as it’s funny, yellow and squeaky, it’s a duck!
