7 Unexpected Color Splashes for Bathroom Sinks

Sinks are workhouses in the bathroom. We use them to wash up, brush our teeth and lean on while we preen in the mirror. Because of their functionality, they’re typically overlooked when it comes to adding style, and as a result are almost always all white. But they don’t have to be. Painting the underside of a sink is a terrific way to add a dash of fun color to a bathroom.

This project works best with a wall-mounted sink that has a lip. The underside needs to have a rough or matte finish so that the paint will adhere. Many homeowners have had good results using latex house paint, but if you want a superdurable finish or lack the DIY skills to paint it yourself, you can have the sink painted by a tub refinisher, sprayed at an auto body shop or, for the most durable finish, have it powder coated.

Red is an assertive hue and tough to pull off in large doses in a bathroom, but it can be a great accent color. This sky blue and crimson palette is fun and colorful, perfect for a kids’ bathroom.

For a similar hue, try California Poppy S-G-160 from Behr.

Create a beach-vacation vibe in your bathroom with a palette of muted blues, greens, white and tan. Save the boldest hue for the centerpiece of the room, the underside of a cool wall-mounted sink for two.

For a similar hue, try Kiwi Breeze 076-5 from Mythic Paint.

Got a small army sharing a single bathroom? Check out this fantastic sink for three from Kohler. It comes with a matte black finish on the underside that you can leave as is or paint any color of your choosing, such as a pretty grayish blue like the one here.

For a similar hue, try Palisade Blue 4006-3B from Valspar.

Fans of superbright neon hues can have a lot of fun with this project. The paintable area under a wall-hung sink is typically quite small, so you can pull off the wildest, loudest colors — those that would be too intense in large quantities — that you like.

For a similar hue, try Sunlit Plaza AC201-Y from Kelly-Moore Paints.

Or go soothing and neutral with a nice light gray. This color will work with any other colors you bring into the bathroom.

When selecting paint be sure to give some thought to the finish (sheen). The sink in the previous example has a high-gloss sheen, which is more durable and easier to wipe clean but tends to show water marks. Also, any rough or uneven areas, which could be an issue if you are painting an older sink that’s seen a lot of action, will be more pronounced with a high-gloss paint.

The sink shown here was painted with Behr’s Ashes UL260-9 in a flat finish, for a softer, less slick look.

Here’s a fun bold yellow-green that would work well in a bathroom for kids or teens. This fresh and vibrant color looks fantastic with watery blue hues as well as crisp white.

For a similar hue, try Hep Green SW6704 from Sherwin-Williams.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with basic black. This black-clad sink is an elegant choice in this bathroom; I like how it contrasts with the light and muted colors.
