White Toilet, Black Lid: Trending in a Bathroom Near You

Back in the days before Houzz existed, I remember ripping a photo out of a magazine of a Rita Konig–designed bathroom that had a white toilet with a black seat and lid — it added such a sharp vintage-y touch. I loved the look, and I’ve had “get black toilet seat” on my home to-do list for about seven years now (this is about the average amount of time something sits on my home to-do list). Slowly but surely, the trend has gained momentum. While it started in bathrooms with the classic early-1900s look of black and white tile, the trend has crept its way into bathrooms of all styles. Here’s a peek at white toilets wearing black lids in all sorts of chic bathrooms.
The black-seat, white-toilet trend began in classic bathrooms like this one. The combo is commonly seen with black and white basket-weave tile floors, subway and penny tiles, and brass fixtures. It is becoming a popular choice for homes with Victorian and art deco style.
Also, the black seats and lids are usually wooden; this one is ebony-stained maple. And no, you do not need to worry about splinters.
Pedestal sinks and claw-foot tubs work well with a black and white toilet.
The pairing has moved into more contemporary rooms too. Here’s a bathroom that combines some of the previously mentioned vintage touches with more modern ones, like a chandelier shade, a footless freestanding tub and gray accent paint.
This transitional bath bridges traditional and modern with its mix of straight lines and curves, marble and wood.
A playfully ornate bathroom takes its black and white seriously. Crisp stripes mix with glossy black paint, elegant marble tiles and over-the-top gilded accessories. It’s kind of like the commode is wearing a tux to a party at the Great Gatsby’s house.
This luxe bathroom combines silver crocodile wallpaper with a black marble wall; an all-white toilet would be a snore in such a dynamic bathroom.
The black and white commode complements the bold, eclectic paisley wallpaper in here.
Now that brass is back, it’s only natural that this black toilet seat should join it. This model even has a fabulous black handle, a fun little accent.
The look can go rustic cabin and farmhouse as well.
A black and white claw-foot bathtub and a black and white commode are well paired in this loft. They hold their own against a rich wood floor and big global accent pieces.

Any toilet with an old-fashioned high tank and handle pull should be required to have a black lid.
