Guest Picks: A His-and-Her Closet Makeover
It’s almost January, and I’ve got the mad urge to put my closet in order now that the ripped wrapping paper has been gathered up into the rubbish bin and the lights have been carefully wound up and stored until next year.
To be honest, I’ve lived in my house for 10 years and haven’t ever touched the spacious walk-in closet. It has bad lighting and ugly wire storage that is grossly insufficient, not to mention the builder-grade paint that desperately needs a makeover. I share the space with a tall, dark and handsome man who isn’t opposed to a few feminine touches, but he definitely appreciates a masculine stamp here and there in our shared spaces.
I’ve been trying to come up with solutions for storage, laundry, high-shelf access (for me, not him) and a few decorative touches to help the closet look a bit more intentional and like it belongs to the rest of the home. Here I’ve gathered many items that I plan to incorporate into this revamp, and I hope it inspires you to tackle those long-put-off areas of your home too. — Sasha from Lemonade Makin’ Mama
Birkeland 6-Drawer Dresser, White - $299 My husband loves drawers. When we go to hotels, he is the guy who unpacks and uses the drawers. That being the case, I would love to get a pair of long dressers and sit them side by side on the main wall of the closet. One for him, one for me.
Veruca Mirror - $179.90 I would love to hang a feminine, scrolled mirror similar to this one above the closet dresser — or perhaps two of them if I go with a pair of dressers. Buy on Houzz
Park Mirrored Jewelry Closet - $699 If I don’t go with the scrolled mirror, I would chose something like this. It’s mirrored jewelry storage, so it would work well in the closet.
Stormy Sky 1616 Paint I’m planning a paint job as part of this closet makeover. I currently have Benjamin Moore’s Stormy Sky in my bedroom and master bath, and I love the way it makes the white trim and accents pop. I think it’s the perfect color for balancing some of the more feminine touches, and it’s also very soothing.
Hampton Bay Tilt-Out Hamper, Triple, White - $229 Every closet has a few necessities, and a clothes hamper is often one of them. This one has three pullout compartments. It’s really pretty and looks like a nice piece of furniture.
Gunmetal Knob - $14 I’m going with a lot of white furniture pieces, but I’ve found that switching out cheap hardware can really make a big impact. These metal knobs from Restoration Hardware would have a conversation with the dark wall paint and strikingly contrast the white finishes.
Bailey Step Stool, Off-White - $119 My husband is a foot taller than I am, but he isn’t always around to reach things for me. So I love the idea of keeping a cute footstool in the closet for the high shelves. This white one would look great with the dark gray paint.
Sutton Modular Closet Collection - $199 Because my closet has ugly wire shelving right now, I’m on the lookout for customizable pieces that have a solid, well-built appearance. These definitely fit the bill.
Dark Walnut Men's Clothes Organizer/Valet - $77.99 This personal valet station would be very appreciated by my guy. It has plenty of places for all the bits and bobs he keeps in his pockets and a place where he can lay out his clothing the night before. It’s a great way to streamline his getting-ready process.
Wood Charging Station Plus Valet - $149.95 I love that this valet box is also a charging station. I can’t even tell you how handy this would be for my husband’s many gadgets.
Paloma Collapsible Storage Sweater Box - $29.50 I like the idea of having a couple of lidded boxes for out-of-season items. They make attractive storage and serve a purpose, which is nice.
Threshold Mirrored Jewelry Box Collection - $12.99 These have been on my wish list for a while now. They are the sweetest and most stylish little jewelry boxes, and a few of them in varied patterns and colors would make for a neutral, chic accessory.
Accessorize Hand Jewelry Holder - $52.99 I like to see my jewelry, so something like this would be useful.
Criss Knit Indoor-Outdoor Pouf - $179 This pouf would be a hit in the master closet. Right now there’s no place to sit down and put on shoes or pull up socks, and this knitted piece wouldn’t take up too much space and would be easy to move around as needed.
Rawhide Ivory Rug - $257.99 I’ve fallen pretty hard for this faux-cowhide rug. It’s cruelty free, and it would add a chic and unexpected touch in a closet, of all places. Why not?
Knappa Pendant Lamp - $24.99 For a bit of playfulness, I want a light fixture that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I already have this one hanging above my bed, and carrying it into the master closet might create a nice, streamlined look.
Biscayne Dot Wallpaper, Cream/Gold - $125 I’m not sure if I’ll be able to pull this off, but I have been dreaming of one wall in this fun gold-dot wallpaper. The gray paint is nice and masculine, but this would add a punch of feminine fun.
‘Clickety Clack’ Art Print by Janet Hill Studio - $38 Janet Hill is one of my favorite artists, and I love adding just a hint of whimsy to each of my rooms. It keeps life from getting too serious. I can picture this print hanging in my closet with a thick white frame or maybe even a gold one.
Muscleman Hook - $22 Just for fun, I like this muscleman hook. I think my husband will chuckle as he hangs his bathrobe on it.
Italian Leather Room Spray - $35 Italian leather is the perfect scent for a closet.
