Photos of 2013: The Most Popular Kids’ Spaces
Kids’ rooms are typically the most fun spaces to decorate in a home. It’s where designers and parents get to, well, be kids again. Things we wouldn’t normally incorporate into the rest of the house are acceptable — even encouraged. Candy colors, whimsical themes and furniture that you actually have to climb become the norm.
But that’s not all. Looking at some of the most saved kids’ room photos on Houzz, I found that parents and designers feel strongly about giving their kids a space that’s well designed. Perhaps they’ve discovered what designer Sari Sunshine has. She’s designed multiple teenage girls’ rooms and found that after their rooms got a professional treatment, the kids took better care of their stuff and actually kept their rooms clean. That’s something we can all learn from.
Here are the 15 most saved kids’ room photos uploaded in 2013. Which one is your favorite?
1. The most saved kids’ room photo was also the No. 16 most saved photo overall that was uploaded in 2013. The wood-lined loft and treehouse-style bucket pulley system helped win over readers.

2. This is one of those photos that get your imagination going full throttle. Parents want their kids to be happy and free of boredom, especially if the activity is something away from a TV or computer screen. A corner performance stage and costume cabinet help with that.

3. Funny how the top nursery photos in our list include similar elements: soft pink, an ottoman and a stuffed elephant. The standout here, though, is the deep gray wall color.

4. This is the ultimate built-in kids’ bed. It’s got smart storage in the steps and doors that likely lead to a cool fort or clubhouse. Bipede designed the unit, while a local cabinetmaker built it out of fir plywood.

5. With technology these days, most kids just need a bed and a place to put their laptop when they’re not lying on the floor doing homework. Susanna Cots custom designed this beautiful and smart oak bed system that’s a dresser and desk all in one.

6. Any parent knows that most of a child’s playtime happens outside of a bedroom. That’s why dedicated playspaces are great. This one has everything a kid (and parent) could want: open floor space, individual desks, lots of storage and a whiteboard as the focal point, rather than a TV. Plus, a Togo sofa, Flor tiles and snazzy paint should instill a great design sense in the kids who play in here.

7. The nursery is one of the most thought-about rooms in a home that’s expecting a baby. Once that nesting impulse kicks in, look out.
Here designer Lori Gentile was going for a soft Moroccan theme, incorporating light pink decor and a henna-style paisley-pattern wallpaper. It’s got just the right mix of baby-soft appeal and stylish design.

9. Saving space is perhaps the most important thing in a kids’ room. Here a bunk bed clears the way, as does a wall-spanning storage system with cabinets, shelves, drawers and a window seat, as well as metal locker bins. You can see a lot of toys in here, yet the floor is completely free and clear.

10. Custom chairs in outdoor Ralph Lauren fabric draw attention, but the built-in bunk beds are the real showstopper here. I love how a central ladder leads to a small loft space that opens to the top bunks.
