10 Terrific Pass-Throughs Widen Your Kitchen Options
Who wants to be left in the kitchen cooking alone while friends and family gather in the other room? Not me. Houses and how we gather have evolved over the years. Isolated kitchens tucked away in the back of the house are a thing of the past. I do like an open-concept kitchen, but I really like options more. And a pass-through from kitchen to dining space or family room presents great options.
A pass-through lets you be part of the gathering in a dining room while taking care of cooking in the kitchen. It also acts as a serving area for the dining room — and even a patio — with easy access from the kitchen. Want to close out the conversation going on in the family room while you have your own in the kitchen? A pass-through provides that option as well. Here are some pass-throughs that look great, provide options and function like a dream.
Pass-throughs can be as dramatic as you want them to be. Consider the drama of an extra-wide opening with glasses and plates in full view. I love the idea of kitchen basics’ being accessible from both sides of the pass-through.
Two bookcases anchor this pass-through for a symmetrical and architectural statement. This custom design has the option of closing, and there are overhead lights on either side of the opening.
A pass-through that connects the kitchen with an exterior space feels nostalgic and functional. To maintain a connection between the two spaces, use the same countertop material inside and out.
Create a pass-through that doubles as a display for special dishes and glasses. Spotlight special pieces for a bit of drama.
Add architectural elements like these columns for a custom look. It’s also wise to consider your lighting plan early on; notice how the center fixture is aligned perfectly with the center of the pass-through and the background cabinets. A nice touch!
A pass-through does not have to be full height. If you would rather not give up precious upper cabinet space, then consider uppers with a pass-through underneath.
The arched detail of this opening allows for continuity of the cabinet details. Notice the lighting at the very top of the arched inset. Additional light also filters in through openings that replace a backsplash.
Glass shelving above a pass-through allows for an open, minimalist feel while presenting lots of opportunity for lighting details.
Divide and conquer with a partition wall that includes a pass-through. A good example of beautiful function, this opening separates spaces while allowing kitchen occupants to feel included with the rest of the family.
A pass-through can also provide extra storage on the dining or family room side. Consider shallow lower cabinets for tall glasses and linens.
