My Houzz: Playful Retro Style Perks Up a Dutch Home
Jeroen and Anja Hesp are huge fans of clean, purposeful, fuss-free design. When the couple — she’s an interior designer; he’s a business consultant — found their 1930s home in the small village of Santpoort, the Netherlands, only the stained glass windows remained as evidence of what it had once been. The Hesps outfitted the interior with a sleek kitchen and thoughtfully added select midcentury pieces and lighting for visual impact. The result is a colorful yet clean-lined house that’s versatile enough to accommodate three active children.
Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: Anja and Jeroen Hesp and their children, Reyer,(age 12), Binck (10) and Catelijne (7)
Location: Santpoort, the Netherlands
Size: 115 square meters (1,238 square feet); 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom
The couple considers the kitchen the epicenter of their family’s life, as it’s where they always start and end each day. The previous homeowners extended the space to create the dining area and added a skylight to give the room an airy and spacious feel — tough to find in homes from the 1930s.
The kitchen’s focal point is the retro-style orange Smeg refrigerator. “I was so happy when I found that orange ’70s Karlsson calendar clock to hang above the fridge,” says Anja. “It completes the style I wanted to create.”
The 1960s Verner Panton chairs add even more retro glam. “I had been eyeing those for a long time,” Anja says, “and was so thrilled when my parents-in-law offered to buy them for us as a wedding gift.”

The couple remodeled the kitchen with sleek white Danish cabinetry from Kvik. The stainless appliances are also new. Anja says she wanted appliances without many frills, because of her love of simple, clean lines.
Jeroen bought this Buddha art piece for Anja’s birthday. The colorful painting is the perfect backdrop for the family’s favorite seat in the house: a classic Eames lounge chair. “I always wanted that chair and had been saving for it for a long time,” says Anja. The three children love to sit in it or just rotate on it for fun, while Anja considers it her favorite reading spot. “It’s timeless and classic, and it is also extremely comfortable,” she says.

Anja likes to combine modern design pieces with vintage finds. Opposite the Eames chair is a 1920s wardrobe she brought home from England. “We use part of it to hang additional coats that don’t fit in the hallway,” says Anja. “And in the other half, we constructed shelves to hold our liquor.”
Above the wardrobe sits a provocative lamp in the shape of a fly. “I have a soft spot for quirky and unique lamps, as will be apparent through the entire house,” says Anja.
Lamp: Mademoiselle Filou, Oligo
The stairway is adorned with Vitra’s web-like Algue, which is made of interlocking pieces of plastic.
The living room is spare but not demure. “I tried to add as much popping colors to the room as possible to brighten up the space,” Anja says. A bold purple stripe serves as a backdrop for a wall-mounted TV and a pair of 1960s Orange Slice chairs by Pierre Paulin. In the corner of the room are a 1970s lamp and a cupboard Anja found online; the stained glass windows are original to the home.
Sofa: Klippan, Ikea
Anja loves to watch 1960s movies, and those served as her inspiration for the master bedroom. The vintage nightstands are online finds.

In 10-year-old son Binck’s bedroom, the couple tucked a loft bed under the A-frame roof. The vintage display cabinet houses Binck’s carefully organized collection of Star Wars figurines.
The compact room lacks built-in storage, so Anja added a vintage trunk from a secondhand shop for Binck’s toys.
This bookcase is a vintage find from the online marketplace Marktplaats.
Yellow lamp: Ikea
Daughter Catelijne’s room is filled with vintage treasures, like an heirloom rocking horse and an old dollhouse. Catelijne’s favorite stuffed hippo sits in the corner next to a vintage chair.
Rug: Rozenkelim
Catelijne’s room contains a smaller version of the 1920s wardrobe seen in the living room. Anja acquired the piece in England.
Eldest son Reyer collects shells and mineral stones, which are proudly displayed above his bed. The locker-style wardrobe gives his room a “rough and playful” look, according to Anja.
Reyer is very active in judo; his trophies are neatly displayed in a corner bookshelf.
Anja, shown here, believes interior design should be both beautiful and functional. “Save up for new quality pieces and match those with vintage designs,” she advises. “It gives your home character and adds interest to a space.”
