The bedroom is where you can completely relax and let your cares melt away. But why should the bed get all the glory? By transforming an open corner or wall space in the bedroom into a lounge area for your awake hours, you can turn the room into an oasis that serves all of your relaxation desires. These ideas can help. Warning: Side effects of such inspiration may cause you to never want to leave your bedroom again.
Determine your purpose. So how do you wish to lounge? If your leisure activity of choice is reading, a chair tucked in a quiet corner near a good lighting source may be all you need.
This custom chaise encourages you to put your feet up to kick-start that relaxation.
If you want your own TV watching time, a bedroom setup like this will place you away from the hullabaloo of the living or family room, allowing you your very own throne.
Be sure to pair a comfortable chair with a side table large enough to fit the remote and a table lamp. If the arrangement is too far from a wall outlet, consider installing a floor outlet.
Viewing distance range. Unlike a reading nook that can be anywhere with a light source, a chair for TV watching should be at a comfortable distance from the set. The optimum viewing distance from a 26-inch TV is about 3¼ to 5½ feet; for a 40-inch TV, try 5 to 8⅓ feet.
Lighting. Incandescent bulbs, though not the most energy efficient, have a desirable glow with a warm aesthetic as well as offer good reading light. To get these same qualities in an LED bulb, choose one with at least 2,700 Kelvin warmth or lower. Numbers higher than that indicate a cooler, bluer light.
Bask in Lamplight’s Comfort This Season
A corner window nook. In this bedroom a sectional sofa makes great use of a corner window. A long, swivel-neck bedside lamp and bedside table serve both sleeping and lounging areas with efficiency.
One lounge area, many purposes. A cozy daybed, sofa or chaise at the end of the bed offers a place for reading, naps and even an impromptu sleepover for the little ones in Mom and Dad’s room.
A chair for the kids’ room, too. The master suite isn’t the only bedroom where a lounge area can be used and appreciated. Encourage children to read more by outfitting their rooms with their own perfectly sized chair.
This petite chair in front of the bookcase is a magnet that is sure to draw a child away from the TV and video games.
Types of chairs. A club chair can be tucked into a corner by the bed. Many can be found in 30- to 35-inch widths and 30- to 35-inch depths.
Armless slipper chairs have a slim profile and come in a range of sizes: about 24- to 31-inch widths and 31- to 36-inch depths.
A wingback chair is a great way to keep you more upright and alert for reading than lying down in bed.
Or opt for the flexibility of a recliner and ottoman. To replicate this look, use an Eames Lounge Ottoman, which comes in black, ivory or pearl leather. Give each recliner its own ottoman or let one ottoman share the duties.
If your bedroom enjoys the benefits of a wide or bay window, a built-in window bench will add a bit of heaven to the room without getting in the way of foot traffic or other furniture.

If your idea of relaxation is sharing a pot of coffee and the Sunday paper, you may prefer a Victorian lady’s chair. Place a couple of beautiful upholstered chairs around a coffee table near the window, and you’ll have the makings for a perfect morning.
An upholstered ottoman, like this skirted version, will encourage having a tea party in pajamas. A large tray provides a stable tabletop.
