You can invest so much effort in bringing home the perfect mattress that fits your physical needs, but if it’s not matched with a headboard that meets your aesthetic wants, even the most comfortable bed in the world won’t draw you in fully. Complete the package with a headboard that allows you to enjoy a bed’s visual and tangible comforts in equal parts.
Teenage dream. When it comes to luxurious comfort, you can’t beat a padded headboard wrapped in quality fabric. This plush, tufted headboard adorned with rhinestones was made by H-Studio.

Going for baroque. If you’re going with an upholstered headboard, the more luxurious the fabric, the better. This bordello-chic bedroom, as its designer calls it, is furnished with a red velvet headboard framed in white solid wood. Red sheets and a white-faux fur throw contribute layers of richness.
Shades of gray. This headboard’s upholstery takes a much more clean-lined approach. The floor-to-ceiling headboard has a combination of soothing grays and a wood frame. Mirrors on either side reflect the fire and lamplight to fuel romance.
Felt it. Hand-stitched felt bucks the conventional thinking of what a headboard needs to be made of. The warm neutrals of this piece mirror the other earthy textures designer Jessica Helgerson used in the rest of the home.
A touch of Normandy. You don’t have to scrap your wooden headboard to get a fabric feel. Add to it, like the design team responsible for this Francophile bedroom did. A custom valance allows yards of luxurious fabrics to flow gracefully from the ceiling to the floor behind an existing headboard, giving the piece a whole new, inviting look.
Mexican sueño. Every night this bed takes its owners, if only metaphysically, to their favorite resort in Los Cabos. An exact replica of the resort’s bed was custom made by DeMejico. It features solid mesquite, hand-pounded iron nails and fabric that was hand made by Mexican Otomi artisans.

Moroccan getaway. Transport yourself to another world after a long day with a headboard representing places you’ve traveled to — or hope to visit someday. This bed is adorned with a Moroccan screen that Design Vidal affixed to the wall. Blue Moroccan lamps and tables on each side set a romantic tone and could fool you into thinking you’re waking up in a foreign land.
Country time. A custom reclaimed wood headboard with metal straps fits the dimensions of this bed, as well as the reclaimed-wood theme in this Newport Beach, California, house.
Beautiful birch. The team behind this guest bedroom’s design took the wooden headboard to new heights with these custom pieces featuring an ornate display of birch branches. The headboards’ natural features track with the rest of the home’s mountain aesthetics.

Mantel me this. The design team at The Old Painted Cottage takes its company’s name seriously; just look at this headboard made from a 6-foot-wide fireplace mantel. An upholstered center ensures that pillows don’t fall into the surround’s empty cavity.
