Guest Picks: Light Wood Accents That'll Grow on You
My husband and I shared a great vision for the midcentury ranch that we purchased earlier this year: replace miles of tan carpeting with miles of light maple hardwood flooring. What came next was the realization that with light wood floors, we would need to embrace light wood details with our furniture and decor. We have since been working to curate a variety of ash, birch and light oak products to help build our new color palette and redesign the overall feel of our home.
The mission has tasked us with taking a good, hard look at every room in our house. The items I'm sharing here well represent how we are choosing to embrace light woods in our everyday belongings to help make our home meet our vision, and to help it continue to inspire us. — Emily from Merrypad
Alba Credenza - $599 There's so much that I love about the Alba credenza, from the warm ash base to the cool beveled doors. It has been on my want-want-want list for as long as it has been in stores!
Sleepytime Rocker, Ecru With Light Legs - $449.10 I splurged on this rocker for the nursery, knowing that the pretty light ash legs would harmonize so nicely with the new maple flooring. The wide-set seat has major appeal too — perfect for late-night snuggles.
Design by Conran Beep Floor Lamp - $420 The light wood accents on this modern floor lamp really caught my eye when I saw it in person. It's a stunning piece and would look so savvy in my living room.
Modu-licious Deskette - $799.20 The clean and modern shape of this desk is perfectly aligned with what I need for my home. Given the size and functional storage too, it could easily work in any space.
Sloan Upholstered Chair, Golden Gate Performance Velvet - $699 Though darker than the ash, birch and beech that I often gravitate to, the still-light solid hardwood base of this chair would look really great with light maple flooring. And if you choose an even lighter upholstery than this mustard yellow, the wood will seem to lighten too.
Mandal Bed Frame With Drawers - $349 The classic Ikea birch veneer is an easy go-to for a light-hued furniture solution, but the natural wood of this bed frame (coupled with its sleek underbed storage) is really appealing, especially when the bed is sitting atop natural maple flooring.
Rhea Crib, Birch/White - $670 This is my favorite crib, probably ever. The birch detailing and modern shape look so perfect in my baby's nursery.
Verso Shelf 34, Natural Wood - EUR 420 The ladder-shelf concept would be a great fit in my high-ceilinged living room. It would break up the traditional book and magazine storage in a really modern, fun way. Plus, it has a great wooden design. (It's also available in black and white).
Pacific Wonderland Macrame Palapa Sunshine and Apricot Lounge Chair - $718 This totally wonderful combination of geometrically woven macramé and birch plywood would be perfect for either indoor or outdoor use.
Folky Flying Swallows - GBP 36 Integrating light wood accents in more than just flooring and furniture is important for achieving a cohesive look. Enter the cutest birch birds ever; they're a subtle decoration for any room.
Curved Branch Curtain Rod - $148 These cool wooden curtain rods look like real branches. They would make a beautiful feature in rustic bungalows and modern dwellings alike.
About a Chair 22, Mustard Seat/Natural Frame - $340 Pretty chair alert! As an alternative to the classic Eames, this wooden frame and bold mustard-colored seat would be perfect perched over light hardwood floors.
Cara Wood Plate - $55 I'd invite these pretty wooden plates into my dining room any day.
Douglas Fir Quarter-Cut Wall Covering - $7.95 Even light wood walls are possible, thanks to a variety of veneer wallpaper products. This would be an interesting way of incorporating light wood into a space that the hardwood floors don't extend into — like the kitchen or the entryway, with its flagstone floor.
Custom Engraved Wood Cutting Board, Ampersand Design by Richwood Creations - $40 These American-made cutting boards are a cute, functional accessory. Order a customized version or choose an existing design in your choice of wood.
Wooden Bowl, Neon Yellow and Black Crossed by Wind & Willow Home - $35 I love the touches of yellow and black that take this blonde beech bowl from ordinary to striking. It would be good for dinner salads or as a catchall in the entryway.
Crates, Classic - $65 Plywood milk crates? Totally awesome. I want one to hold blankets beside the couch, and then five more to fill in space on my living room shelves.
Alarm Dock for iPhone 5, Natural Wood - $38 I've always liked the look of a nice, wooden iPhone dock, and this modern design would look great on my bedside table.
ARS Tall Table The shape and color of these tables and stools are wonderful, and the thick wood top is like icing on the cake.
Animal Box, Llama - $49 Look! Llama! This beautifully formed wooden toy easily doubles as quirky home decor. I can see it as a bookend or a stand-alone decoration on the mantel.
