Work In Some Workout Room Right at Home

A home gym isn't just for the rich and famous anymore. All you need is a little (yes, just a little) space to be able to work out in the comfort of your own home. Do you have a room that isn't being used to its full potential? Maybe it's a spacious garage that you rarely park the car in. Maybe it's a home office that's seen better days or a spare bedroom that's become a storage space. With a little elbow grease, you can turn one of those spaces into an exercise room that accommodates your love of Pilates, yoga, running or whatever moves you.

Tired of looking at that treadmill in the corner of the living room? Fed up with tripping over the exercise bike in the bedroom? These spaces will show you how designing a home gym is done.

Attic. Don't let a finished attic go to waste — these small spaces can be wonderful workout rooms. Your exercise equipment will stay out of the rest of your home when it's tucked away at the tippy top of your house, and the privacy you'll get will be well worth the move up a flight of stairs.

Basement. Tuck a small workout area right beneath that awkward space at the bottom of the stairs in the basement. Don't trick yourself into thinking you need an entire room to devote to exercising — you'd be surprised at how your favorite equipment can fit into a tight space.

Walk-out lower level. For homes with the main rooms on the top floor, the ground level can become underutilized. Turn the lower space into a multifunctioning area that can help you get a workout in. Set aside a portion of the level for a home gym and turn the rest of the space into a play area for the kids so you can stay fit and keep an eye on them, too.

Spare bedroom. Has your spare bedroom become more of a catchall for junk? Clear out all the unnecessary clutter, take the items to a consignment shop and use the cash to help you purchase new exercise equipment to fill the now-empty room.

Two-car garage. If you're a health nut, your garage may go to better use as a gym. This garage became a gym with a remodel that turned garage doors into French doors, cement flooring into an acoustic floor surface and a wall into a gigantic mirror.

Sunroom. A seldom-used sunroom could become the ultimate yoga retreat. A sunroom's large windows and sliding glass doors let in plenty of natural light and beautiful views — the perfect environment for a yoga session.

Bonus room. Not sure what to do with that random bonus room that came with your house? Get motivated and turn it into a gym to help you stay on top of your fitness routine. You don't need much — start with a couple of yoga mats, some free weights and a stationary bike, like in this room. You'll have your own personal gym in no time.

Hallway. If you can't find an ounce of extra space for a workout room, consider the end of a rarely used hallway. Just place your stationary bike in front of that closet you never use, roll out your yoga mat at the entrance and hang a mirror or two for the finishing touch.
