Show Some Skin: Leather Accents Lend a Subtle Edge

I love leather shoes and leather purses, but when it comes to leather in my house, I can handle only so much. In the 10 years I've been a decorator, I've installed only two leather sectionals — and that's because the clients specifically requested them. As sturdy and low maintenance as leather can be, I just don't find leather furniture cozy to snuggle up in — but that's just me.
Of course, leather still makes a great accent. Its raw texture can add warmth to any home style. Below I'll show you how to bring leather into your home in small doses.
If you're like me and would rather snuggle on a sectional made of fabric, add some leather throw pillows.
Give an old-fashioned trunk a classic update with leather edges and handles. This trunk makes for a stylish coffee table that doubles the surface and storage space in the living room.
Tip: You can buy leather handles to add to a trunk or coffee table with drawers. As with cabinets, if the trunk or table already has holes drilled for handles, make sure your handles measure accordingly.
A good leather belt is a wardrobe staple that adds a classic touch to any outfit. Bring this same simple look to your home with strappy leather accents on upholstery.
I love how the belt-style strap holds the cushion in place in this room. This could be a simple DIY project: Just drill four holes, run matching belts through and secure them in place.
Cabinets and appliances often take center stage in the kitchen, but if you're willing to push the envelope, using leather pulls as hardware will add some edge.
Tip: Keep in mind that greasy and wet hands will constantly touch these handles. Using regular household cleansers won't be an option; leather handles may require special cleaning and detailing.
Adding leather handles is one of the easiest DIY projects you can tackle. Measure the existing holes for handles, and purchase or make new leather pulls to screw into place.
Tip: Leather handle and pull prices start as low as $8 per handle, but can run as high as $100 per handle, so be mindful about your purchases, especially if you have a lot of cabinets and drawers.

Vinyl offers the look of leather at a lower cost. This designer used two different colors of vinyl to create playful handles for an Ikea storage unit in a kids' room.
Leather poufs combine a contemporary piece with a traditional material. They're also great because they can do double duty as a footrest or seating.
If you crave the look of leather on a more traditional ottoman, consider adding one in a living room to double as seating and a coffee table. This leather ottoman adds a masculine feel to a space with strong feminine touches.
