Fall can be an awkward season to decorate for: The weather's not nice enough to keep the paper lanterns out, but it's too early to put up the Christmas lights. Instead of reaching into the grab bag at your nearest crafts store, take this advice from designer to the stars Adam Hunter. Despite his glamorous clients, Hunter's favorite fall decor focuses on the natural beauty of the season (which just happens to be the most affordable route).
Thinking about how you can decorate your home for fall? Here are some of Hunter's best tips for adding seasonal warmth to your home.
Q. What are your top 5 fall decorating must-haves?
Answer:
Heirloom pumpkins (not jack-o'-lanterns). Mums in the same fall hue. Fall-themed dishes, pillows and throws. I change my decorative pillows and throws for every season, and change out my everyday dishes from summer tones to fall ones. Fresh new candles and/or room sprays in warm, fall scents. Branches from outside! This is an easy way to facilitate a home from summer to fall.
Q. What's some advice for people who want to think outside of the typical fall decorating box?
A. Go all natural for your seasonal decor. Use fall veggies to decorate your kitchen, like acorn squash and sweet potatoes in your favorite antique bowl. It's functional and fabulous.
Q. What's your one big decorating "no" for fall?
A. Fake! No fake pumpkins, flowers or branches. Just change them out with fresh ones as necessary. If you shop right, they don't have to be that expensive.
Q. How can someone decorate a more modern home for fall?
A. Have a less-is-more attitude. One spectacular white pumpkin in a gray fireplace is stunning. Think simple, simple, simple.
Q. What are some easy, affordable fall decorative items homeowners can use from now until December?
A. Take your cues from nature; use your imagination and use what you have in your home in different ways. Take a walk in the woods and collect natural objects that catch your eye along the way: rocks, leaves, nuts and even old logs. Make small vignettes with what you find. Get creative! Surround a candleholder with vines and fall leaves, berries and rocks. It looks fabulous, and you can't buy it.
Get your decor from the grocery store! Pumpkins, which can last until well after Thanksgiving, are an inexpensive decorative fix. Try stacking pumpkins large to small for a seasonal display with whimsy. Try filling a bowl with bright red apples. Or put out a bowl of nuts and lay a nutcracker on top.
