Inspired by Place: Bedrooms That Embrace Their Surroundings

Sometimes the best inspiration for a room comes from right outside the window. In the case of these nine bedrooms, the style is strongly influenced by the immediate surroundings — whether rugged mountains, pastoral farmland or a city pulsing with excitement. Some views complement the rooms, while others provide needed contrast.
Long pastoral views. The reclaimed-wood accent wall complements the home's rural landscape and breaks up the large expanse of this bedroom, giving it a more intimate feeling in spite of its size. The long horizontal boards direct the eye to the long horizontal window, which offers vast views of the Calgary, Alberta, plains.
A serene lakeside perch. Subdued watery blues and creams complement the lake view just outside this Michigan bedroom's window. You can almost hear the water lapping on the shore.
Worldly urban surroundings. The restrained palette of this industrial-style room is a good match for the exciting city view of Vancouver out the window. The oversize map of the world is a good reflection of how global the city has become.
A nest in the forest. Corner windows always partner beautifully with rich woods, especially when there's a view of the trees, as in this Sacramento, California, bedroom. The result is a warm place in which to nest, surrounded by nature's beauty.
A building with a glamorous (and slightly racy) art deco history. This glam bedroom is in the Palmolive Building in Chicago. The art deco style of the building influenced the elegant style of the room. The structure was also known as the Playboy Building for quite a few years, so I can't help drawing a connection between that plush rug and the fuzzy tails on those Playboy bunnies.
Indoor-outdoor living in Southern California. The whites and pops of bright color in this midcentury modern bedroom create a seamless transition to the patio surrounding it. The apple-green throw even matches the patio umbrella.
Local character in Texas Hill Country. Even a minimalist bedroom can nod to the unique geography and ranch life in this part of the country. Details like the strong wood grains and the cowhide on the modern chaise longue provide a direct connection to the bedroom's rugged setting.
Sunny yellow in Denver. A mile closer to the sun than many American cities, Denver's bright light and big skies are emphasized in the golden hues of the bedding and the lamps in this room (and throughout the house).
Another reason sunny yellow fits the house so well is that the home uses passive solar, harnessing the sun's energy for power.

A rocky coastline on a Maine island. This bedroom is a cozy respite from the swirl of the sea and the sublime beauty of the coastline just outside the window. The rugged stone home is crafted of rocks from the island, and the walls inside reveal this history and connection to the land and sea.
