Guest Picks: 20 Inspiring Finds for a Creative Workspace
As a work-from-home creative, it's so important that I stay inspired by what's around me: the art on the walls, the lines of my furniture, and the patterns and textiles on the floor and windows. As my husband, Scott, and I fill our new-to-us in-home studio-office, we're being careful to select items that make us smile, have utilitarian purpose and, quite simply, are beautiful.
When your only coworkers are your pets, the room you're working in takes on double duty. As silly as it may seem, it has to "speak" to you, make you feel cheerful, play nice. When you're working in a room that gives you fuzzy feelings, your job is that much easier. When you're happier, your clients can feel that happiness, and you can turn the light off at the end of the day with that "Wow, I nailed it today!" feeling. Here are some pieces that have caught my eye. — Kim from Yellow Brick Home
Industrial Chair Stool - $540 » This stool reminds me of working over a drafting table, sketching the still life in front of me (I'm going back to college now!). It's great nostalgic touch.
Andy Warhol Philosophy Pencils - $8.99 » Who wouldn't want a snippet of advice every day from Andy Warhol (one of my pop art heroes)? The colorful erasers are just a bonus.
Work Hard - GBP 40 » This has been my motto since I began working for myself as a commissioned painter. It has been hanging in my studio for over a year, serves as a daily reminder to state the obvious and reminds my of everything my grandpa ever taught me.
Libby Desk Lamp - $200 » The classic styling and metallic finish on this desk lamp are sweet but sassy, simple and elegant. Working wouldn't be so bad under this light.
Stendig 2014 Wall Calendar - $36.95 » Don't forget the date! Bold and graphic, I love this Stendig calendar.
Everett Armchair, Lagoon Performance Velvet - $549 » I've always loved the idea of adding additional seating to an office or studio space. Every now and then, you just want to take your laptop and sit on a real chair. This fits the bill: stylish, comfortable and lively.
Martha Stewart Living Craft Space Eight-Drawer Flat-File Cabinet, Cement Gray - $399 » This flat file cabinet would be a great way to store art prints, files and accessories. I can only imagine how amazing it would look if I swapped out the knobs for something gold and brassy (or, you know, sassy).
Custom Stamp, Eubanks - $40 » Put a stamp on it! Sign thank you notes for clients with a custom stamp. That's always a good thing for business.
Perch Counter Stool - $255 » The round top with the flat edge, the brightly colored legs and the dark wood tone would look beautiful in a bright white studio space. These are art in themselves, don't you think?
Whitewashed Wood + Metal Shelves - $899 » A wall lined with clean white shelves displaying your artist's tools (paints, brushes, cameras and the like) is art in itself. Rolling casters are a favorite of mine — they seem to be on almost everything I put in my personal studio space. That way, I can move things around and create different areas if needed.
Fabric Thumbtacks, Pink - $8 » As if your actual inspiration board needs to be any more, well, inspirational (or beautiful, for that matter), how about some gorgeous and inspirational tacks? I love how these little details can make all the difference.
Rochelle Apartment Sofa, Emerald - $2,099 » I have a chair in my in-home studio, but what about a couch? If the space allows for it, I think a great seating area is so important for a little creative break. The velvet on this one makes it feel extra special, but the masculine color balances everything out. Just imagine stepping away from your desk and taking a midafternoon nap on this girl.
Parson's Console, White - $349 » A shallow console table always makes the perfect setup for a quick task station. Whether you need a bare space to wrap a shipment, jot a not to yourself or to a client, or just want to put down your coffee mug, the clean lines of this parson's table fit the bill.
Monogrammed Mugs - $6 » Coffee. Period.
Miron Spring Bloom Kilim Black Multi Rug - $99 » Against pale, creamy walls, this rug would be the focal point! The flat weave makes it perfect for rolling a desk chair over, and the colors are so inspiring. This absolutely needs to be in my home studio.
Cushion Cover, Cat - $9.95 » This cat. As soon as I saw this, I imagined an entire room around it. A studio space needs to be beautiful, so it should get a dose of throws and pillows, especially ones with humor.
Lucite Desk Accessory, Pencil Holder - $38 » Because I can never seem to find my pencil at the right time, I'm loving these Lucite desk accessories. They take up no visual space, but you'll always have what you need.
Farmhouse Salvaged Wood Extension Table - $2,495 » This would be the investment piece in the entire room, but I've always envisioned a large, sturdy, farmhouse-style table (something that would stand the test of time) as my desk. Whether I'm working through emails or putting paint to canvas, I love how solid this guy looks. I'd probably name him too.
Retro Desk Phone - $69 » I love a great vintage throwback, and I'm thinking this phone will get me to stop texting and start talking.
Geometry Pastel Pillow - $36 » The overlapping colors and patterns on this pillow are art in itself.
