Hanging outdoor curtains can be a quick and budget-friendly way to create a well-styled outdoor space. This outdoor accessory has become very popular and can be purchased at most major home decor retailers. But there's more to a stylish look than picking out the right fabric and hue. Whether you choose bold colors, soft neutrals or a chiffon-style fabric, the way you hang your curtains will make a huge difference in the final look.
Outdoor Round Finial Drape Rod, Pewter Finish - $59 » Let's start with the basics. If you plan to hang curtains with a traditional rod, get one made for outdoors; it should be labeled on the packaging. This is critical, since the rod will need to withstand the natural elements. Outdoor curtain rods won't rust or discolor.
If you want a rod that's a little more rustic, use galvanized pipes from your local hardware store, as blogger Jessica Bruno did on her patio, shown here. These pipes are extremely sturdy and can handle the heaviest of curtains.
Galvanized pipes are sold in various sizes with different connectors, allowing you to add as many pieces as needed. This method relies on some DIY experience, but it's friendly to your wallet. Be sure your rod is firmly anchored to the outdoor wall and can support the curtains' weight.
Bold turquoise curtains hang from floor to ceiling here, with curtain rings for easy opening and closing. Tiebacks like these will let you choose the amount of sunshine and views.
Studio Curtain Rod Corner Connector - $11 » To navigate corners with your curtain rods, install rod connectors like these for an uninterrupted flow of curtains.
If your patio is made of solid brick or stone, it'll be difficult to install hardware. Ceiling-mounted hardware might be easier. For a fun and relaxed feel, use curtains with tie tops instead of rings, as shown here.
If your outdoor drapery is purely decorative, use pocket panels. This is the most basic curtain style, with a sewn-in rod pocket at the top of each curtain panel; just push the rod directly through.
Pocket panels work well if you need to install curtains on an arched structure. You can push mini rods through the pockets of the panels and hang them on the descending ends of each arch, just like the curtains in this great outdoor space.
Decorative hooks work well for stationary curtains. Installed directly on the wall, hooks can add a beautiful architectural element to an outdoor space.
Curtains with grommets look more contemporary. They slide back and forth easily, and the look works well for transitional-style outdoor rooms.
If the budget allows, try a remote-controlled panel to expose a stunning view — as the designer did for this hilltop beauty.
For a playful, Shabby Chic–style look, use rope as a curtain rod. Simply attach sturdy hooks on opposite sides of the wall at your preferred height.
I'm usually a strong proponent of hanging curtains from floor to ceiling, but I love this look here because it speaks to the room's casual vibe. Plus, these curtains will be easy to remove and update later on.
