Escape to a Summer Holiday Fantasy at a Hamptons Show House

http://www.decor-ideas.org 07/22/2013 18:45 Decor Ideas

With a Maserati and piano in the garage, a beach-inspired dining area and crisp white curtains enclosing an elegant backyard patio, the first-ever Holiday House Hamptons is meant to encapsulate a carefree summer fantasy. Or at least, the fantasies of 24 designers from around the country each assigned a space in a shingled gambrel-roof new home by Villadom Custom Homes and designed by McDonough & Conroy Architects.

Each room in the sprawling 7,900-square-foot home is inspired by a different holiday with a strong emphasis on celebrating women and breast cancer survivors. All proceeds from the show house benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.)

2013 Holiday House Hamptons: 4 Fair Hills Lane, Bridgehampton, New York; through July 21, 2013; open Fridays–Mondays, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Thursdays until 8 p.m.; $30 general admission. More info

Kitchen and dining room: "Summer Solstice"
Design team: Duneier Design (this photo and next)

Inspired by the longest day of the year and summer entertaining, Jennifer Duneier incorporated bright pops of warm-weather colors for a festive, summertime vibe. "I was inspired by the clean lines of the white Arclinea cabinetry, which was selected first," says Duneier. The polished traditional moldings mix with with a tiled accent wall, and a custom stainless steel hood ties it all together. Duneier applied her go-to color, turquoise, to the 12-foot ceiling.

The space is inspired by the family members of both of the designers who have battled breast cancer.

Media room: "Bastille Day"
Design team: Guillaume Gentet (this photo and next)

This playful media room, dedicated to the designer's grandmother, is meant for a modern Marie Antoinette. The cheerful pink tone of the room was inspired by the reflective pink-stone surfaces of the Petit Trianon (a wedding-present château given to the young queen) in Versailles, France.

Sweet treats from Ladurée adorn a trio of modern tables from Roche Bobois, which provided most of the furnishings in this space. Muriel Valette-Roger of About Details reproduced delicate Marie Antoinette bows once used on the queen's dresses for the chair detailing and upholstery as well as the beading on the Louis XV chairs.

Consoles: Volutes, Roche Bobois; sofas: Tangram, Roche Bobois; drapery fabric: Verel del Belval, Creations Metaphores; Place Vendôme mural: Chesley McLaren

The paneled walls are finished with an accented pink patina, and many of the large rectangular picture moldings above the level of the chair rail enclose swaths of pink Venetian plaster. This means that wall surfaces alternate between a pink patina, antique silver-leafed surfaces and the mica-infused pale pink Venetian plaster.

Design team: Inson Dubois Wood (this photo and next)

The team at Inson Dubois Wood took on the task of designing an unfinished garage to be an elegant sanctuary, pairing a grand piano with a Maserati. An antique high-pile shag rug warms up the concrete floor, while a trio of glossy car-hood-like lacquer lounge chairs add seating.

In the Hamptons, anyone building, renovating or decorating a house wants to be in by Memorial Day to extend the summer season as much as possible. This space celebrates the spirit of being a hub for a summer cocktail party or simply somewhere to unwind. This transitional space is outfitted primarily in stone, wood and mica and gives tribute to Arbor Day. "Given its proximity to the back of the property, we set out to create the perfect indoor-outdoor retreat — a place to enjoy a cup of tea or a cocktail, a mid-afternoon nap or a late summer’s evening by the fire," says designer James Huniford. The showpiece is a custom swinging daybed inspired by a tree swing.

Foyer: "Renewal Day"
Design team: Donna Livingston Design (this photo and previous)

Challenged by the sheer scale of a 22-foot-high foyer, designer Donna Livingston anchored the space with a 17th-century Chinese rug symbolizing a dragon and "great destiny," she says. Artwork celebrating women includes a 6-foot-tall bronze sculpture, a smaller Madonna sculpture by J.D. Hansen on the console and an abstract nude titled "Natural Beauty" by Robert Farber, used in a Newsweek issue on breast cancer.

Design team: Timothy Brown Studio (this photo and previous)

Designer Timothy Brown started with the Kartell desk, and the rest of the space evolved around it. He says, "Somehow it all falls into place with a little sweat." Hunting to find pieces that would work together, Brown found the yellow upholstered chair at a friend's antiques shop, then added personal touches like the Lego phone atop the desk which, was a childhood gift from his mother. The space celebrates the need for fathers to have their own modern yet masculine retreat.

Bedroom: "Summer of 40 Something"
Design team: James Michael Howard

With a passion for living well and casual elegance, the designer celebrates the freedom of show house design in a bedroom full of objects that mix new and old. Wine bar and hall: "Landscape Majestic"
Design team: Fawn Galli Interior Design (this photo and previous)

Inspired by a colorful, dreamy summer landscape full of gold deer, hot-pink bunnies and buzzing bees, the design team used colorful restrained geometrics to bring the outside in, since this space doesn't receive any outside light. A dynamic sense of mystery, wonder and the unknown is evoked in this underground space through oversize winged creatures and graphic art by Polly Apfelbaum and Hurvin Anderson.

Patio: "May Day"
Design team: The Design Studio (this photo and previous)

Drawing upon the French Fête du Muguet, or May Day, holiday, the exterior living spaces are meant to capture a serene and elegant atmosphere. As a symbol of this holiday and the idea of renewal, the colors of dogwood blossoms — pink and white — are carried throughout the design. A simplistic color palette, varying opacities of decorative elements and the layering of materials and textures combine in each of the three outdoor lounge areas.
