Old Digs, New Threads
One thing that didn’t change in the makeover was his love of brown. “Before, I’ve used a deep chocolate, but this time I modulated it a little, painting the library almost a devil’s-food-cake brown that has more red and gray in it,” explains Stephen, who began his career as a residential interior designer. The color brown continues to play an accent role throughout the space. It’s in the graphic, ethnic-flavored fabrics on pillows, the original glazed leather on an old repro Louis XVI fauteil, the new linen velvet on an 18th-century Swedish chair by the stairs, the living room’s zebra rug, and the curtains—“I like to have a little substance and weight at the windows,” he explains. “It’s important to have one element that weaves it all together, and for me, that element is brown.”
